Yep, you heard me right—sometimes the best advice from a divorce lawyer is to stay married… at least, if there’s no abuse or danger involved. As strange as it may sound, that’s what I often recommend first. Sometimes people end up meeting with me just to learn their options with no real intention of getting divorced, and THAT’S OKAY!
Here's why: My hope for every client is the same: I want what’s BEST for you… Sometimes that’s a divorce, but sometimes it’s not. I am not in the business of talking anyone into OR out of a divorce. It’s a deeply personal decision AND it has major financial and emotional ramifications. I want YOU to feel fully empowered to make that decision.
Sure, it’s smart to check out your legal options. For instance, talk to a lawyer before confronting your spouse about anything as serious as infidelity. But also consider other avenues—marriage counseling, talking with a pastor or clergy, or even going on a marriage retreat. Put in the effort to work things out before you file. But absolutely, have that lawyer chat to understand your rights and how to protect yourself in case it doesn’t work out.
Why this matters? Simple. Divorce is hard. It’s not just about the paperwork—it’s about picking up the pieces of your life, adjusting to single life, co-parenting, and, yes, it’s expensive. So, I don’t sugarcoat it when I tell you that sometimes, staying married can sometimes be worth fighting for.
Here’s a simple breakdown of my advice:
1. Learn your legal options. Knowledge is power, people!
2. Give marriage-saving options a try. Explore therapy, counseling, and other support before making any decisions.
3. If it’s clear that divorce is the only option, try to keep it peaceful and productive by negotiating a settlement.
4. If your spouse refuses to collaborate, then we make a strategic plan, together.
